Nano nature has the solutions
Professor Eric Isaacs is an architect of atoms, a builder of structures so small that 8000 or more of them might be lined up across a human hair. He is a physicist in a field called compressed matter and he conducts research into super conductivity and magnetism. He is also an expert in the use of the synchrotron to find solutions to important 21st century questions. Finding enough energy to meet the soaring demands of the world is but one of them.

New medical building features the latest in renewable energy systems
City Core Developments Inc. has chosen Selectpower Inc. to provide state-of-the-art heating, cooling and solar power systems for its futuristic new Springdale Professional Building project in Brampton, ON, Selectpower announced today. The Springdale project, located next to Brampton's new William Osler Hospital, the largest hospital in Canada, is under construction through 2006 and opening in 2007. The 120,000-square-foot condominium professional-medical building is described by builder City Core Developments as one of the most-advanced commercial projects ever developed in Canada.

Enzymes may hold answer to hydrogen power
Enzymes rather than scarce and expensive platinum may hold the answer to the hydrogen fuel cells of the future to halt global warming and as the oil runs out, a scientist said on Wednesday. Fraser Armstrong, chemistry professor at Oxford University, said that enzymes known as hydrogenases are more effective than platinum at converting hydrogen into electrons, but the chemistry is not fully understood. So far he has only managed to create a fuel cell in his laboratory capable of powering a wrist watch - and then only for two days - but he hopes this might lead to bigger and better things.

Hydrexia Receives Investment To Commercialize Hydrogen Storage
Hydrexia, the UniQuest start-up company has an exclusive licence to an innovative magnesium alloy, developed at The University of Queensland, which stores hydrogen in a solid form. Hydrexia's technology could make hydrogen a viable alternative energy source according to Omar Khalifa, Uniseed Investment Manager. “While the technology is still early stage, Uniseed was excited by its potential to be a cost effective energy source as well as the company's ability to have a working prototype developed,” said Mr Khalifa.

Prop. 87 backers send clean-air cars
Supporters of the Proposition 87 oil tax initiative on the November ballot launched a caravan of alternative energy-powered vehicles Wednesday from San Diego across the state to promote their measure, which would pay for research into cleaner-burning fuels. “Prop. 87 will bring cleaner air and cheaper energy to make us healthier, wealthier and safer,” said Anthony Rubenstein, sponsor of the initiative. “Prop. 87 replaces imported oil with fuels made right here at home.” He made his case at Pearson Ford Fuels, the only service station in the state that features a full menu of alternative fuels.

The nuclear option
"To meet the demands of a rapidly swelling population, Texas needs to expand and diversify its electric generation capacity. It also must build cleaner, less polluting power plants. That's why it is good to see TXU propose to build as many as six nuclear power reactors at up to three sites. The nuclear units wouldn't address Texas' short-term need to increase generation capacity. As TXU officials noted, it's unlikely that any reactors could go online before 2015. But nuclear power can play a vital role in helping meet the state's long-term needs for expanded, cleaner, diversified generating capacity."

Group to bike for greening of America
Riding bicycles equipped with solar panels, UI professors, students, former Hawkeyes, and concerned citizens will pedal through five states in support of using renewable resources. From Sept. 21 to 28, students across Iowa, along with other sustainability-minded groups, will traverse 1,270 miles to promote the benefits of alternative power and to tour green buildings. "The Midwest is really full of energy resources," said Teresa Galluzzo, a research assistant for the Iowa Policy Project, the group sponsoring the ride. "We want to draw attention to global warming and to the fact that there are [alternative] energy solutions on the ground working."
