Lignite used as energy source before Civil War
(Texarkana Gazette) The mining of South Arkansas lignite dates back to pre-Civil War days. (MLive.com) Can Ann Arbor and Michigan be the center of gravity for alternative energy research and development in an environment where dozens of states are vying to lead? Leaders in energy research and economic development say it could happen, but the state needs more funding for alternative energy start-up companies, a powerful advocate for energy in the state who can bend the ear of politicians and companies, and cooperation across research institutions' lines.
