China needs advanced tech to help conserve energy
(Shanghai Daily) The constantly increasing consumption of traditional non-renewable energy all over the world is posing threats to both energy sustainability and the environment. To tackle these problems, China needs to devote greater efforts to energy saving, developing clean energy and finding better alternatives.

Virgin's Alternative Energy
(EcoWorld.com) Last week, Richard Branson announced some of Virgin's profits will be plowed into developing alternative energy, up to as much as 3.0 billion dollars. This is a good and noble thing to do, but also requires discussion. What if all those profits are invested in the hydrogen fuel cell sector (a very inefficient use of funds), or into biofuel plantations that deforested the planet?

GM developing home hydrogen refueling device
(Fuel Cell Works) General Motors is building a prototype for a home hydrogen refueling unit in hope of selling fuel-cell cars by 2011. The unit, which would make hydrogen using either electricity or sunlight, would help sidestep one of the most vexing problems surrounding the creation of the pollution-free, alternative-power cars: how to persuade oil companies to invest in expensive new hydrogen stations that would compete with their core product, gasoline.

The Myth Of Alternative Energy
(CounterCurrents.org) Alternative sources of energy will never be very useful, for several reasons, but mainly because of a problem of "net energy": the amount of energy output is not sufficiently greater than the amount of energy input. Alternative sources simply don't have enough "bang" to replace 30 billion annual barrels of oil.

High costs fuel search for alternatives
(Naples Daily News) David Hauth cannot wait to get his electric bill. Just a few months ago, it was a piece of mail that spurred his plan to carry out a slow and steady revenge against the state's largest utility company. Now, it means a big payoff for the 59-year-old commercial pilot. The bill from Florida Power and Light this month should carry considerable savings for Hauth, who lives in a one-story house in Estero and paid up to $300 in utility costs this summer.

Shell Launches Website Designed to Educate Students
(PR Newswire ) To encourage middle and high school students' interest in math and science, while introducing them to the world of energy, Shell Oil Company is launching a new educational website, "Energizing Your Future with Shell" at http://www.shell.com/us/energizeyourfuture.
